How to choose a juicer like a pro

Are you getting into juicing for the first time or are you already a convinced follower ? In the lines that follow, you will find all the relevant information and advice of someone who knows what she’s talking about,... me ! to choose the best equipment that suits your needs. I even propose a list of my favorites.

First, forget the old models of the 70's, 80's and 90's that were real nightmares to use and clean. The world of juicing changed quite a bit in recent years given its now of great popularity. The devices available today are becoming more efficient. There are now hundreds of models... Easy to get lost.

Here is some relevant information to know before buying a juicer.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FAST AND SLOW JUICE EXTRACTOR

Before talking about the best  juicers on the market, there is a distinction to be made. There are 2 types of juicers : fast AND slow. You may also think of blenders, but they are definitely in a class of their own. Blender does not equal Juicer. I explain everything here for you.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF JUICERS?

The fast juice extractor (centrifugal juicer) and the slow juicer are two different devices, but they have a similar function : extract the juice from the fiber of the food, but in a different way.

FAST JUICER OR CENTRIFUGAL JUICER

The fast juicer uses a high speed blade to extract juice from food.

 ADVANTAGES

  • Generally easy and quick to clean ;

  • Affordable. A centrifugal juicer retail price is around $ 150 ;

  • Easy to use.

 DISADVANTAGES

  • Greater loss in juice (does not fully extract the juice). You will need more food to get the same quantity of juice as a slow juicer ;

  • Noisy ;

  • Can eliminate some of the nutrients due to the heat created by the mechanism and high speed ;

  • The juice produce by a fast juicer keeps it’s freshness for about 5 hours.

Despite the fact that some of the nutrients (vitamins and minerals) are lost because of the heat, you will still find the benefits of juicing with the centrifugal juicer. That is, you will still have a greater daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, faster and more efficient absorption of vitamins and minerals, and the consumption of a wider variety of foods.

SLOW JUICER, MASTICATING JUICER, COLD-PRESSED JUICER

A slow type juicer allows cold pressing of food and thus retains a greater share of nutritional value. Cold-pressed is basically chewing food under a high pressure.

 ADVANTAGES

  • Superior quality of juices (nutrients) ;

  • Economics on products as it extracts more juice from the fibers of food ;

  • Longer engine life ;

  • Specially designed for extracting juice from leafy vegetables (spinach, cabbage, lettuce, kale) ;

  • Easy to clean ;

  • Juice can be preserved for up to 48 hours with minimal loss of nutritional value and with the same good taste ;

  • Extracts the nut juice and sherbets.

 DISADVANTAGES

  • The high price, ranging between $ 250 and $ 600 For juicing fans, the slow juicer is by far the best choice.

 Make sure to choose one with a drop that is large enough for food, which will reduce preparation time. With this type of device, the juice can be preserved for up to 48 hours. You can even prepare your juices in advance.

WHICH JUICER SHOULD I CHOOSE ?

If you are new to Juicing and you do not know if your new passion will last, the fast juicer is probably your best option. Although less expensive to buy, it still offers a good value.

For Juicing enthusiasts, especially lovers of green juice made from kale, spinach, chard and lettuce, the masticating (slow) juicer is recommended.

There are now juicers with a large drop which greatly reduces the preparation time. It can fit in a whole apple.

THE BLENDER !

We must not forget the famous blender. As mentioned above, the slow juicer and the centrifugal one have a common goal: to extract the juice from the fiber of the food. The blender does not extract anything, on the contrary it keeps everything (fiber and juice) by grinding it. A juice can be as nutritious as a smoothie depending on its composition. By using a blender we keep the insoluble fiber of food which gives us a sense of satiety and helps digestion. Important to know, we should drink a smoothie at the same speed as we would eat the foods that compose it. You probably already have a good blender. Now all you have to do is get yourself a juicer and you'll be able to make smoothies with squeezed juices ! You will have reached the expert level.

JUICERS FAVORITES LIFESTYLE 360

FOR JUICING LOVERS

Kuvings whole slow juicer C7000

Our recommendation number 1, since this juicer with wide drop cold presses food for maximum quality. You will find several imitations of the brand Kuvings, but the parts are of lower quality. It is suggested to buy devices from Korea rather than China.

FOR BEGINNERS

Breville Juice Foutain Compact BJE200XL

Centrifugal type, affordable, easy to clean.

FOR JUICING PROS

Tribest GS-P506 Greenstar Commercial Cold-Press Complete Masticating Juicer

Note that the "twin gears" juice extractors require a longer preparation time than the others because of the small size of the chute. However the quality of the juice is higher.
